Woman Considers Charging Her Teen Son Rent, Sparks A Never-Ending Debate

Parenting July, 07, 2025

It was originally her husband’s idea to make their son contribute but the confusion started when a colleague said the idea was rubbish. “The house is nothing without the kid, it should always be their go-to place in need and so charging them is out of the question,” they said. However, the lady wanted to know the general point of view. Many recalled their teenage years while some with kids around the same age too added to the pool of knowledge. The overall discussion was divided into a ‘yes’, ‘no’ and ‘yes but what age is appropriate’ groups.

“I began contributing to family rent ever since I started my first part-time work at the age of 16,” said LaticeRoyale. “My family saw a lot of my distant cousins coming in as guests and so each of them paid 10 pounds a week for the basic needs and I guess a little contribution is always fine” someone commented. The ‘yes’ group further divided itself into two parts one who supported the idea of charging the kids only a little money but others were in favor of a fully-fledged rent. ButteredToast mentioned that it was important to make kids pay to prepare them for the real world.

Another option that was suggested was to charge rent to put it into a savings account for the kid’s future. But some still denounce the idea, “I never paid and will never make them pay” wrote CheekyFunkyMonkey. “My parents never accepted any financial help from their kids, even if I move back now I’d still be living free and so I am completely against this idea,” said RedPony1.
