Woman Becomes Allergic To Water After Giving Birth
This rare allergy was noticed by a mother after she gave birth to her daughter. The new mother was experiencing all kinds of rashes and itchiness whenever she used to come in contact with water. Cherelle Farrugia, 26, from Cardiff, Wales, never experienced rashes in her whole life.
She noticed the rashes and hives when she was bathing her 18-month-old daughter. When she is in contact with water the rash breaks out, and mostly is on her stomach, back and neck and shoulders. But when the breakout is worse it even reaches her face. All of which is physically very painful.
One of the reasons behind this sudden and rare allergy is the change in hormones. Both hormonal changes and bodily changes are there due to pregnancy. Farrugia remembers telling about some of the symptoms to her doctors during pregnancy but none of them believed her. All they concluded was that it is because of pregnancy and will go away after her baby is born.
All they suggested was using different soap according to her skin type. They prescribed her various ointments and even suggested her changing her towels since some people have a very sensitive skin.
Farrugia knew it in her heart that water was causing all the problems and she was allergic to water. She listed all her symptoms and experimented on her own. She tried bathing in different water types and at different temperatures but nothing worked. Finally, a private allergist confirmed that she indeed has water allergy.
She felt really disconnected with her daughter at first because she could not bath her, wash her. But with time she knew how to be active in her daughter’s life without coming in contact with water. Slowly and steadily she settled into this new phase of her life.
In the beginning, though it was very overwhelming to stay away from water, a person who loves to dance in rain now could not even go outside when it was drizzling. But with time everything fell into the right place.
She read about other cases of water allergy and some were even worse. Some patients could not even drink water and had to drink diet coke for the rest of their lives. She was lucky enough to have a mild case of water allergy.
Her family and friends are there to help her out. Everybody has picked out their time when they drop by and help her out around the house. She is particularly thankful to her best friend, Lucy Gilmore who is always there for her every beck and call.
