When A Birthmark Surgery Initiated A Social Support Group Campaign

Womanhood July, 12, 2025

Birthmarks that too on face always drive souls out of their nerves when they have to step out of their home with them. They try out all the possible ways to put them under the sheet of foundation or veil. After all, these unwanted marks do not receive a warm acceptance from the complexion-conscious society. Same was the case with a woman named Amy Elsegood.

Amy was rankled with a port-wine stain on the left of her face. She used the grace of makeup to keep it out of the sight of the nose-pokers around her. She would not step out of her home without the heavy tone for a single day. Thus, people became used to of her makeup laced face. Finally, after having enough of her birthmark shame, she decided to undergo cosmetic surgery. The 27-year-old saw a surgeon at MYA Cosmetic Surgery to discuss her case.

To her delight, she got the date for her surgery. She got on her surgery bed on 23rd January. But it did not turn out a joyous ride for her. The surgery turned the left side of her face red and swollen. Well, that was a usual side effect of that surgery. Her surgeon advised her not to apply anything on the red part.

After having some rest, it was time for her to get back to her hectic work life. But Amy was in no mood to go out for it in that condition. The response from her society was not positive for her. So she had expected a similar kind of reaction from her office people too. Finally, she got back to her back after four days of surgery. Her skepticism vanished off as she stepped in her workspace. Her colleagues were all in smiles greeting her with their no-makeup faces.

Amy felt empowered and over the moon to see them by her side. She could not believe her eyes. Her joy prompted her to move to the social media world to share their move on 24th January. Shedding light on her story, she said, “I had the surgery last Thursday, Jan 23, and it was my first day (back at work) just four days later. I always wear make-up to work, even though all my colleagues know I have the birthmark. The girls I worked with knew I was feeling nervous about returning to work without any foundation but I never expected them to do anything like that – I was overwhelmed by it all”.

Adding to that, she said, “I usually use foundation to cover it – when I was younger, people would ask what I’ve done to my face or whether I’d be in a fight. But at work, they made me so much more comfortable, there was complete acceptance and support”.

Her Instagram story won attention all around the world. It ended up making her the ambassador for her local Birthmark Support Group.

Thus, the painful journey of the woman yielded some fruitful delights. Hopefully, her story would change the perceptions about the physical looks.
