Teachers Donated Sick Days So Colleague Can Spend Time With His Daughter Battling Cancer
It breaks your heart even if thinking about your baby getting sick, yet alone diagnosed with leukemia. It’s something we would wish nobody had to bear. But it happens and just like various parents, David and Megan Green from Alabama were also facing this after their one year old baby was diagnosed with cancer.
That is why David, a high school football coach and social studies teacher at Jemison High School, Huntsville, ran out of sick leaves, spending the time taking care of his sick daughter. Therefore, on March 20, 2019 Megan Green, and elementary school teacher at Huntsville wrote an open letter on Facebook, asking the fellow teachers to donate days so that he can spend as much time with her as he can.
She wrote, “David is officially out of sick days at work. We want him to continue to be able to be with us at the hospital while Kinsley is getting Chemotherapy so if you are a teacher in Alabama and are in a position to donate a sick day, we would greatly appreciate it! Kinsley is the biggest daddy’s girl and needs him to be here as often as he can, so she would be so thankful for any donated days so she can spend time with her daddy”. She posted this along with an adorable photo of the father-daughter duo instantly melting hearts of various people across the internet.

According to Alabama Public Schools’ Employee laws, each teacher can have one sick day per month of the employment duration. However, in extreme cases, other employees can help by donating their sick days to those in need, known as a “sick leave bank”.
Days after taking the post to Facebook, teachers from around the state came forward to help the family, donating their sick days to the teacher. The support had been tremendous.
In an interview Megan said, “We were blown away with the response that we received with the sick days. We were hoping to get a couple days so he could be here once a week. It’s a huge blessing and we can’t wait until we are in a position to give back and help others”.
Apart from this, the couple also opened a GoFund me page asking people to help covering the Cancer expenses. Any extra amount would be donated to cancer research foundation.
We certainly hope that little baby Kinsley will recover soon.
