Study Claims Having A Sister Makes You Kinder

Relationships July, 07, 2025

There is no doubt that every sibling’s fight. Siblings don’t need a reason to fight they are siblings is just enough reason to fight. But no other person can touch or say a thing to their siblings. It is so precious to share all the memories of your childhood with your siblings when you grow up. The study proves that having a female sister is more beneficial in the sibling relationship, but we all love our brothers and sister equally.

Researchers from Leicester’s De Montfort University and Ulster University in Northern Ireland questioned more than 570 people aged between 17 and 25 years. The researchers included psychologists who questioned the people participating in the research on various topics. The topics included questions on mental health, their day-to-day routine, and other general questions. The research had surprising results.

The study showed that the people growing up with female siblings were happier and had a more optimistic approach towards their life. People with female siblings communicate openly and freely which helps them give a positive outlook towards their life. When one can communicate freely they have some unseen burden lifted off from their shoulders. When you can share anything openly with your sibling it is the most important and strongest support you can have from anyone.

Professor Tony Cassidy who carried out the study shared that: “Sisters appear to encourage more open communication and cohesion in families. However, the brothers seem to have an alternative effect. Emotional expression is fundamental to good psychological health and having sisters promotes this in families. It could be that boys have a natural tendency not to talk about things. With boys together it is about a conspiracy of silence not to talk. Girls tend to break that down.”

Support from female siblings plays a very important role when we talk about cases of parent splits. It is usually observed that boys are not able to open up easily because of many reasons such as what society expects of them. Society expects that boys should not express their feelings like in the case of crying which is wrong. Thus, female siblings are more easy to talk to.

Researcher Laura Padilla-Walker also shared that: “Sibling affection from either gender was related to less delinquency and more pro-social behaviors like greater kindness and generosity, volunteering and helping others.”

This research is also backed by another research that took place back in 2010 by the researchers from Brigham Young University in Utah while they looked into the effects of having a sibling. 395 families were questioned in this research. All the families had more than one child and it concluded with the same results. No doubt the research concluded that a family with sisters as siblings the children are kinder and happier, but it also stressed that in the families’ brothers are also beneficial provided they have a loving relationship.
