Santa Got Replaced By ‘Sustainability Pirate’ In Day Care Center
All this came to light when an anonymous parent sent a copy of the invite to Neil Mitchell. Neil Mitchell is a host on an Australian radio show, 3AW. He did not mention the name of the day care center on his show.
The invitation received by Neil Mitchell read, “This year’s party will be a get together picnic and a fresh food swap for children and families to celebrate the end of the year.” Everything was normal so far in the invitation. The twist in the invitation began after this. It read, “Sustainability Pirate will be attending and we will have a Nature Treasure Hunt. We are looking forward to see you at the celebration picnic.”
It was later revealed that the day care center behind this initiative was Kensington Children’s Cooperative. According to Yahoo! News, this center recently received new grant funding for environmental projects. The center also reported to News 7 in a post that their decision was more wide-ranging. They hoped to include everyone and make everyone fell welcome irrespective of their spiritual and religious beliefs. This post was later removed and taken down.
Kristoffer Paulsen, a parent who spoke with the Australian news station, had a strong belief about this Christmas modification. He described it as “PC gone wild.” He said, “If anyone has any clues about the sustainability pirate and what drugs they were taking when they came up with that, I would like to know.” He added that all the parents were getting on social media and were a bit cranky about it. There were some heated opinions about Santa and Christmas. People obviously hated the idea about Sustainability Pirate showing up on Christmas day.
Sunrise, a show on Australian news channels, also covered this story. They posted a video on the show’s Facebook page on December 11 about the whole idea behind this new way of celebrating Christmas. It received a lot of comments. More than 6,000 commentators were bold enough to show their true opinion about the day care center’s decision.
One man joked in the comment that he had fond memories of his holiday season for 40 years and now he is eagerly waiting to visit a local substantial pirate at his local shopping center. He asked what were they doing to their heritage? Other women replied to this by saying, “This is very sad. It is a daycare in Australia where we celebrate Christmas and Santa. There has already been a pirate day this year! Did they check with everyone first to make sure everyone likes Pirates? Lets Santa have his time and celebrate.”
Parents are surely not ready to accept this change. Making kids learn about sustainability is a necessary thing but we can definitely do that on any other day, for example on Earth Day, which is not so far now.
