Mum Set To Break Burpee World Record For Her Daughter’s Illness

Lifestyle July, 13, 2025

She executed this task at her gym in New Jersey, Genfitness and a team of six members were there to watch and record every rep she did. Now, if you are familiar with the fitness regimes, then you might be knowing how tough burpees are.

It can bring nightmares when you are asked to do burpees. They are undoubtedly one of the toughest exercises. But Gena, being a fitness enthusiast took the challenge to a new level for a good reason.

She organized burpee-a-thon at her gym to spread awareness and also raise money for research in omphalocele which is a birth deformity that causes the infant’s organs such as intestines and liver to stick out of the belly through the belly button. They are covered in a thin, nearly transparent sac, as told by the Centers for Disease and Control Prevention.

Gena’s six-year-old daughter Emma suffers from omphalocele and she was warned about it when she was just 13 weeks pregnant. At that time, she got to know that it is probably going to lead to a miscarriage but she gave birth to Emma in June 2013.

The Omphalocele Awareness Month is celebrated every year by Gena’s family. In 12 hours between 7:40 am to 7:40 pm, she was able to do 5,332 burpees. After the achievement of her goal, she thanked everyone who encouraged her. The 12 hours of her sincere efforts had been recorded and are now being reviewed by Guinness World Records.

Eva Clark of Abu Dhabi is the current record holder of ‘most chest to ground push up burpees in 12 hours’ which totals to 4,785 and was set in February 2018. Gena did it for her daughter who had been so strong since the last few years when she had to undergo numerous surgeries.

Her daughter also joined her during the last 10 minutes of the challenge. The money raised through this event will be donated to both omphalocele research and the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania (CHOP).

According to Gena, Emma was seven weeks premature when she was born and unfortunately, her first nine months went in the neo-natal intensive care unit (NICU) at CHOP. Even after that, she had to come home with a ventilator, a tracheotomy, and nursing care.

As of now, Emma is leading her life normally like other kids of her age and she is healthy as well. Gena had seen her daughter going through a very difficult time in such a little age and still, she was supporting her mother in completing the challenge.

The process of reviewing Gena’s application for the new world record might take a few weeks. She has kept her fingers crossed to see her hard work become a new world record.
