Mother Has A 17 Rule Contract To Let Son Use A Phone

Parenting July, 01, 2025

Are these rules and enforcements a dire need that has stemmed from the irrational fear of the modern parent? The modern world is fast growing with that also is the dependence to the technology with devices for simple tasks to switch on the lights easily available and much in demand. The world of technology is popping and so is the veins of these distressed and concerned parents.

One such young mom Mel Watts was such a distressed mother and took an extra step to curb the use of technology by getting a contract written out with an over 17 do’s and don’ts for her son Ayden. The contact includes all the rules where the phone can be used and not used. The deeds include not using the phone at their home and definitely not the dining tables, no videoing and picturing unsuspecting individuals, telling all the social media passwords to the parents, no posting of anything derogatory on the media among other thirteen rules. This young blogger put up the contract publicly on her blog and gathered varying responses from her followers and the world of the internet.

People reckon we look alike; I can kinda see it ? 18 when I first heard your heart beat. It’s like you knew I needed you. You changed my life for the absolute better. Two kids learning the ropes of life and parenting together. You were learning to crawl whilst I was learning patience. You were learning to laugh whilst I was learning compassion. You were learning to wrap your little fingers around my whole pinky when I promised you I’d be the best mum to you. I can no longer watch you walk around in shoes beyond your size as now your foot is bigger than mine. I can no longer carry you around on my hip but you could carry me. I can always say I love you and I’m proud of you because everyday I am. #aydenwwhughes

One secondary school teacher took to Facebook to appreciate this young mom by accusing the parents as to how they haven’t taken responsibility all this long and how the students have been adversely affected due to the slight irresponsibility on the behalf of the parents. She goes on to point out the damage the students have endured due to extreme sleeping schedules, how far behind they are in completing their homework and how inactive the students are in the classes, just due to high and unnecessary use of mobile phones.

Now the real question that has been brought up and is discussed around is: Had this young mother taken enforcing rules a step further?

Parents all around have been enforcing rules in their houses for years now and have been doing so for generations. Is the approach of making a “Contract” a step too far? The rules need to be written down sometimes, yes but getting it written down in a form of Contract a bit too much for the son to adapt and get used to?

The questions are endless but we need to accept the fact that mobiles, laptops and desktops have been actually sucking up our time and also leading to many crimes both online and offline. With that also deteriorating our health may it be mental, physical or emotional. Social media is neither an all merry place, it’s filled with its share of facetune, editing and unrealistic standards that demand to be met.

We need to be cautious always, thus sensitizing the kids to it at a young age should be key, right? How you enforce and make your child understand this world is entirely your will. It could be a verbal enforcement or a written contract, it’s all up to the parents and their kids.
