Mom Is Shocked How Much Other Parents Are Paying As Tooth Fairy

Parenting July, 02, 2025

Nicole posted her query on Family Lockdown Tips and Ideas page on Facebook, asking: “My five-year-old Isla came out of school earlier today over the moon she’s finally got wobbly teeth! Two!! So… What’s the going rate these days for the Tooth Fairy?! I’ve asked about and it seems to be either a couple of quid or £10. No in-between. I remember getting £1 and a pick n mix for my first tooth.”

This simple “tooth fairy” question gathered the attention of several users across Facebook and was soon inundated with more than 3500 comments. Later, some parents were also slammed for giving more than what’s acceptable. Most of them agreed that they leave a single coin under the pillow and it accounts for not more than £1. Meanwhile, some people apprised that they were giving much more than that and they also leave a note under the pillow.

A parent suggested: “20 quid first tooth then a tenner, then a fiver then down to a couple of quid after that.” The second parent did the same but after offering £5, they would simply tell that the fairy has no money left. One mom supported her reason for giving £20 as she felt it to be an important milestone for her kid. But a person intervened by saying that their kids get only £2 for the first and £1 for the next occurrences. And to her, £10 seems to be obscene.

Another person added that giving £5 or £10 may make the kids consider it to be a huge milestone but there will be some kids in their class who might as well think the same. Unfortunately, not all families will be able to give so much to their kids and they’d wonder why they got less than the others. As per the tradition, a sweet, a bar of soap, etc. were put under the child’s pillow, but with the changing times, £1 or £2 became quite usual.

Someone said that they used to get 5p as a kid which is equivalent to 50p in today’s era. They could get more but it kills the magic. For such people, £20 sounded like an ‘obscene’ amount. One mum added: “£1.. it’s about the magic, not the money.. isn’t it?”
