Mom Built Fence Window For Her Toddlers To Play With Their Neighbor Friends

Lifestyle July, 12, 2025

Due to the spread of coronavirus, three-year-old and two-year-old kids, named Arlo and Arabella Devonport, could not go out and play with their next-door neighbor, Leo Adlington, who they were used to see every day. All three kids used to play all the time. With social distancing in order, these kids were so close yet so far.

Arlo and Arabella’s mother, Amy Vickers, said that the kids were missing their friend and were finding it hard not seeing anyone during the lockdown. One day, when the kids climbed up the rabbit cage, next to the fence, to see over it into the neighbor’s garden, Amy decided to do something about it. She came up with a clever plan which would allow the kids to play with each other while maintaining social distance.

After discussing her idea with Leo’s mom, Becca, Amy and her partner, Danny, built a window in their fence, and the kids were more than happy. After taking the measurements of the fence, they ordered a plate of plexiglass online. A cutout was taken from the fence and then the plexiglass was screwed to each corner and secured. The children could now see each other every day and chat through the window. To make it even more fun for the kids, the parents also bought wipe board markers so that they could draw pictures on them. They even taught the kids how to play naughts and crosses.

That was honestly an incredible idea. Amy, the clever mom, looked out for her kids. Socializing is important in childhood and the key to achieve it is through interactions. It keeps the kids entertained and happy. Talking about social interaction during early ages, Dr. Heather Wittenberg said that during this lockdown, there were not many interactions between the kids but it was still important that kids spent time with each other.

Amy mentioned that Arabella too benefitted from the window. She started to do “parallel play”. Parallel play is when a child likes to spend some time with someone but they don’t really play together. They play beside each other. Amy also added that the kids spent all day at the window and they really loved it. Photos shared by Amy, where the kids show big thumbs up, clearly shows how much the kids are enjoying it.

In this strange time, everyone needs to be sane and a little bit of creativity can help us in achieving it. Amy’s idea was amazing as it helped the kids to not get bored by staying at home all day. How are you making social distancing and isolation easier for you?
