Attending birthday parties is all fun for the little kids but if you ask their moms, they won’t be thrilled when their toddler comes home with an invitation to a friend’s party. Picking a gift can be complicated considering the judgments that may be thrown their way by the other moms. This woman experienced such criticism for her handmade present and the internet gave its verdict about this situation.
To many of us, gifts are more than the materialistic value that they carry. The thought behind the present has so much more value than its cost. Well, that’s just what some people think as others may not appreciate the thought much.
This mom used her crochet skills to create beautiful handmade sweaters to gift her kid’s friends on their birthdays. However, it didn’t impress a few women who received that homemade gift for their children. But she was unaware of people’s opinions until one woman gave her the “reality check”.
The crochet-expert mom was all set to prepare another gift when her daughter informed her about a friend’s birthday celebration. She loves trying new and fresh designs every time there’s an opportunity to grab her crochet kit.
She shared, “I always check with the birthday child’s parents for clothing size and favourite character/animal/whatever so the child will like the sweater. It’s something unique and special I love doing. The recipients have always been excited and the parents love them.”
This time she had chosen to knit a personalized jumper for her daughter’s friend but she could not have ever guessed the next thing she heard from one of her friends.
“A friend of mine (unrelated to the party in any way) and I were talking and I mentioned my daughter getting to go to a birthday party for the first time since all the craziness started this year. She looked me dead in the eye and said ‘you’re not making a sweater this time are you?’ I was hurt and asked what she meant,” this mom explained.
“She went on to say how it’s really tacky to bring a handmade present and if I can’t afford a present I shouldn’t let my daughter go. I didn’t know how to respond.”
She further revealed that those sweaters cost approximately $80 to knit. Moreover, she has to spend two weeks working really hard to complete one jumper.
“I always enjoyed giving children something unique and special that’s made just for them. Now I’m confused is it really tacky? Or is it thoughtful like I thought,” she concluded her Reddit post.
People commented under the post and encouraged her by saying that she has been doing a brilliant job.
One person wrote, “This friend of yours is the one being tacky thinking a store-bought plastic gift is any better than a gift you made yourself and so much thought a love went into it. Your gift is something the parents will cherish and keep, not throw away after it breaks after playing with it twice.”
Another one expressed, “If someone knitted my kids an $80 blanket I’d probably cry of joy.”
The Reddit users had only nice things to say to this mom. One commented, “If someone hand-crochet my daughter a sweater for her birthday, that would be something that I keep forever and then allow her to give to her child. Makes me tear up a bit thinking of a kid unwrapping such a cool gift!”
