MIL Drops A Mean Ambiguous Compliment On Preemie’s Birth Announcement
Some people just cannot be happy for others. They must be complimenting you in your face but secretly they wish ill of you. People like these are the worst and what is saddening is that sometimes, these are our own family.
The woman thought it was very clever of the mother-in-law. She said, “This woman cannot say a ‘congratulations’ without leaving a backhanded compliment.” The woman posted about the same on her social media. She explained that she and her mother-in-law both are mutual friends with another lady who recently had a premature delivery. She saw her backhanded compliment on her birth announcement. It was an exceptionally difficult birth. The difficulty level was such that either the baby or the mother or both could have died but an amazing team of doctors managed to save both.
The baby was extremely sensitive and fragile. But it was a moment of celebration and so she posted the baby’s name and the time at which the baby was born on her social media to announce the successful birth of her baby. A lot of people commented congratulating the mother but the woman’s mother-in-law did things differently.
The woman’s mother-in-law’s comment on her friend’s post was “It looks weak and very small. Congratulations, praying for you.” She felt disgusted by it and hoped that the mother-in-law should be called out for such behavior. The further comments stated similar views, they suggested that MIL’s behavior was indeed disgusting and unforgivable.
One of the comments said that not only did the MIL call the baby weak but she also used the word “it” to address the baby. This post was not some gender reveal post but it was a birth announcement where the baby’s gender was stated clearly. The woman who posted this comment added that she wouldn’t have tolerated such behavior if it was for her baby or if she was family.
Another person commented upon their generation. According to her, this was the same generation who taught the principle that “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t speak at all.” She was agitated as to why certain mothers-in-law are exempted from this principle and don’t follow their own teachings. Another commenter pointed out the sarcasm of the MIL’s comment. She thought it to be an insult and wondered how in her right mind, would she drop such a sarcastic and demeaning comment.
The woman told that her mother-in-law had deleted the comment later. According to her, she probably deleted the comment because of what her friend’s mother said to the MIL. The new grandmother told the MIL that what she commented on her daughter’s baby’s post was extremely rude and unacceptable and she wouldn’t uphold their friendship of 20 years anymore.
The woman added that she saw her mother-in-law crying over the phone to her son, the woman’s husband telling him that the comment she had dropped was not intended to hurt someone’s feelings. The woman’s husband after listening to all that his mother had to say, reminded her to respect everybody’s boundaries and asked her to be careful of the words she used on social media and with others.
