Bride Asks Bridesmaid To Lose Weight After Outgrowing The Dress

Relationships July, 01, 2025

A bride has shared her story where she asks if she’s in the wrong by asking the bridesmaid to lose weight. Mila, the bridesmaid is her cousin and also a close friend. The 24-year old bride apprised on Reddit that she had planned to get married in October if the social distancing guidelines are not hampered by the occasion.

She explained that her friend had been gaining a lot of weight for the last few months. They also went for dress shopping where the bride had chosen an eggplant velvet dress for Mila. She also agreed to pay for this expensive dress. Now, when she has gained weight, the dress doesn’t seem to be compatible. Either it needs to be custom-made or else it is unavailable for the plus size.

After the lockdown, the hassle proliferated more as they couldn’t go shopping for a new one or wait for an order to come. With this consternation, the OP also stated:
“I already paid for her dress, and I think it’s considerate for her to put on weight when she knows she won’t fit the dress. She’s honestly been really entitled in assuming I’ll just figure it out and replace her dress at my expense. Plus, there’s the bulls–t of calling a weight gain ‘growing out’ of something, as if her own choices had nothing to do with it.”

Well, this comment on anyone would raise a medley of different feelings. She might be unhappy with the new expenses for the dress, which is quite usual in this case. But if it’s the bridesmaid’s weight where she’s pointing at, she’s definitely the wrong person here. Because you might not have any idea about someone’s concern for the increasing weight.

Therefore, the bride texted Mila and requested to lose some pounds to fit in the dress as before. She also stated that she really wanted her in the wedding. Instead, Mila didn’t revert; maybe due to finding something uncanny about the incident. Also, it’s coming from a woman who had been always condemned those who bring others down with her posts. The bride realized that her friend is infuriated at the moment and requested some advice on Reddit.

AITA for asking my bridesmaid to lose weight after she “grew out of” her dress? from AmItheAsshole

Some people agreed to the distress this situation might have caused to the OP. A person explained that it’s truly wrong from Mila’s side but the OP cannot insist on her losing weight by October. Someone else admitted that the OP had the chance to handle the situation in a much proper way but she clearly expressed her evil side with her statement.

Rest others agreed that the OP was actually fat-shaming her friend. Someone pointed out well: “Between ‘gently asking her to go back to the size she was last fall’ and ‘Plus there are the bulls–t of calling a weight gain ‘growing out’ of something, as if her own choices had nothing to do with it,’ It seems like OP is taking her cousin’s weight gain as a personal offense.” Many agreed that it may due to the underlying health issues.
