After 13 Miscarriages Woman’s Dream Of Becoming A Parent Has Shattered

Parenting July, 03, 2025

“Losing a child is not a taboo” as stated by a lovely couple who found each other on a dating website and soon got married leading a happy life. Least did JO Halsey, 47, and her husband Mark, 48 know that their life would come to a standstill as JO kept on miscarrying her babies. She always had a soft corner for kids as she worked as a nanny for several years following which she was trained as a home maternity nurse caring for newborns.

After marrying Mark, she started on having a baby and was quite delighted on discovering that she was pregnant just after 3 weeks of their honeymoon. However, the couple’s happiness did not last too long when JO’s doctor informed her about the first miscarriage of their twins. She was sent home for recovery but did not lose hope as she started trying for conceiving a kid again as she was already 36. Her efforts did not bear any fruit as she miscarried again three weeks after getting pregnant in 2009.

The strong couple did not stop there and JO took the pregnancy test at same cottage in the Cotswolds where Mark proposed her for marriage. They delighted their family and friends with the good news of a positive pregnancy test. Despite of the happiness, she kept on encountering the blood every time she went to the toilet. Soon they found out that they have been blessed with twins in JO’s womb whom they had named Benjamin and Oliver even before their birth.

But the power of grief became even stronger as destiny snatched their kids after their birth as doctors couldn’t find Oliver’s heartbeat and Benjamin’s lungs weren’t strong enough. Hence, they didn’t survive in the world. Both the parents spent two hours with them cherishing every sight of their bodies. After the babies’ funeral, JO was prescribed with antidepressants and diagnosed with PSTD. Therefore, she signed off from her work and started spending more time with Mark which captured back the lost brightness in her eyes.

In March 2010, JO fell pregnant again and miscarried just a few days later. The couple was completely clueless about the reason behind all miscarriages and consulted many doctors. Moving further, they again underwent the same pain of losing a child twice and with this JO’s mental health was adversely getting affected. The worst moment came when she felt suicidal. She was so much depressed that she cut herself off from her closed ones.

The couple went on digging deep inside the reason of all these mishaps. Finally, after all the research and care of health, she conceived again in January 2011 while being continuously on heparin dosage to combat her clotting disorder. She sobbed once more as their 13-week-old baby whom they named Pip passed away. They created a memorial of all their lost children. In addition to this, miscarriages kept on occurring until the 13th time after which they stopped as all their hopes got crushed completely. The alternatives were expensive and adoption became impossible due to medical reasons. Mark constantly provided JO with his support and finally, they moved on.
