A Woman Harassed Another Lady For Breastfeeding Her Baby In Public And Left Her In Tears
Some brainless-ignorant people consider this act sexual just because it involves a woman’s breasts.
A random woman shamed Tabitha Rickard, an Australian woman for breastfeeding her 2-year-old. The worst part is that a stranger had guts to get aggressive with her in public and it made her run away in tears.
It was a hot day and she was volunteering at an event. Her toddler needed a feed, hence, she was there to do that. That is when an old woman came and tapped her on her shoulder.
She asked her to cover up with towel or shawl and Rickard was shocked at the comment like we are. The lady further explained that the men around find it inappropriate and she should either cover up or leave.
Rickard was strong enough to answer back. She said, “If there are men that find it sexually arousing to see a child breastfeeding, then that is their problem, not mine and they need to seek help.”
The woman was adamant and wanted Rickard to do what she wanted. As no one else came to her rescue and she wanted to avoid an argument, she left. When she headed outside, she realized it was raining. Hence, she ran towards the back offices. She couldn’t hold back and started crying.
She further said, “I felt ashamed, confused, sick, scared … it had never crossed my mind that anyone would consider me breastfeeding a sexual act. I felt like I had done something wrong. Like I was flaunting my breast about when I was actually just feeding my son discreetly.”
The staff who were running the event came to her and asked her to come back to her workstation.
Later that day, when she had to feed her baby again, she felt uncomfortable and scared. The other said, “She was encouraged by staff to apologize, which she did do later that day.”
However, she was not 100% honest with her apology. The lady said that Tabitha should have covered up and that it can turn on men.
The mother then posted a poem on her Facebook page, Kangatraining Ballarat in which she explained the traumatizing event. One excerpt says:
“6 years I’ve been breastfeeding and meeting my children’s needs,
6 years with such confidence and free of negativity.
6 years, not a moment did I ever pause to think, that nursing in public was offensive, indecent or even erotic…”
“I was made to feel bad, and even ashamed.
If I don’t cover up, I could just go away.
As I stood up for myself and stated the law, the attack heated up, she continued on more…”
She is all out for empowering women and that is the reason she is sharing her story.
Breastfeeding is natural and not something you can tag as “sexual”.
So, the next time you think of pinpointing a woman who is breastfeeding, know that she doesn’t need your 2 cents.
