A Mother Gave Birth To A Baby Girl Who Has A Twin In Her Own Abdomen

Womanhood July, 12, 2025

Monica Vega, the mother, first went to Dr. Miguel Parra-Saavedra when she was 35-weeks pregnant. She went to see the doctor as her obstetrician had a doubt that the baby might have developed a cyst in her liver.

After the complete detection, the doctors realized that the baby named Itzamara had a small, partially developed infant on her abdomen. An umbilical cord was connected to the baby’s intestine and it helped in providing blood to the fetus.

This rare phenomenon is named as “fetus-in-fetu”. In this condition, the body of the twin contains a malformed, parasitic fetus.

This type of birth is “mass in the abdomen” and is as rare as 1 in 500,000 births. However, in some cases, it can happen in other parts of the body as well.

Vega gave birth to Itzamara on 22nd February and it was the 37th week for her. The birth took place through C-section and the surgeons removed the twin laparoscopically the next day.

While talking about the details of the twin, Parra Saavedra said that the fetus had a head and limbs. However, the twin did not have a heart or a brain.

Itzamara is in good condition now but the doctors still can’t believe that such a thing has happened in the medical field.

Parra-Saavedra said, “I have never heard of anything like this in my entire life, I really did not expect this to happen.”
