This Teen was Fuming After Learning That Her College Tuition Money was Gambled by Dad

Parenting July, 15, 2025

It is well known that colleges cost a tidy sum of money these days. In fact, sending your kid to a private university could cost you nearly $40,000 a year. This is the reason why so many parents try to tighten their belts and save if they can, to avoid leaving their child with a large amount of student loan debt.

That's what one college-bound teen on Reddit says her parents did for her. However, she found out recently how greatly she was tricked as her college savings money was mostly dried up, thanks to her dad’s risky investment. According to the girl, she grew up with the impression that a large portion of her tuition fee would be covered.

It wasn’t just a misinterpretation though- her dad gave his word to her that $70,000 would be used towards her education. That being the case, she then based all her future plans around. She told the readers that she applied for early action for her dream college and fortunately got in. She knew it would be worth a king’s ransom, but reckoned that she would be able to graduate with a feasible amount of debt, keeping in mind her dad’s offering.

The problem which came into her way was that $70,000 of late shrunk way down. The day before, her father told her that he was not in a position to help her at all and he could only be able to get her student’s loan. She was taken aback as he had told her not to worry about it literally a month ago. She asked him the reason for it and he was diverting from that topic before he finally confessed that he had invested the funds in some stocks and that he had lost money.

The teen was completely baffled. He had promised her $70,000 and now he had something like $32,000. Unexpectedly panicked, the Reddit poster tried to look at a positive approach: at least she was still getting some money. When she told her dad that she would still take the $32,000, her dad once again gave her another shocker.

He said that he was not thinking about selling as he was hoping that prices would rise and she should just take a student’s loan until it goes back up. However, it only made her father mad. He said that she should be thankful as they just had $20000set aside in a mutual fund and the only reason they have $32000 was because he made the right investments.

Not only her father, but her mother was also furious at her. The mother said that most people don’t even get their parent's support in college and she shouldn’t be calling her dad a loser for offering to give her $32000. Now that the teen was feeling unappreciative and spoiled about the whole thing, she was anxious whether she overreacted.

In the comments section, some people did feel that she had gone too far and a few people also called her entitled. While some took a stand for the girl. In the end, the Reddit poster said that she had decided to leave her dad out of the equation altogether. Instead, she wanted to take a gap year, save up money of her own and attend college once she could do without depending on her parents. The father was not very transparent with her daughter about the stocks he invested in. A lot of people warned her to keep a check on her father as he might be developing a gambling problem.
