Man Took Gift Money to Reimburse Himself After Throwing Wife a Lavish Baby Shower
A man has been slammed online after he averred that he spent thousands of pounds on his partner’s baby shower and then kept all the cash that they were gifted to cover the costs.
A soon-to-be-father confessed how he wanted to trifle away all the money to throw his pregnant wife a grand baby shower. Keeping his id anonymous, this man from the US took to the internet to share how his wife had wanted a simpler celebration, but he wanted a lavish one. Therefore, he rented a venue and paid for everything, squandering around £2,000. However, this isn’t why he’s been thrashed online. It’s what he did after the party that has invited the criticism.
The man claimed that after the shower, he took all the money that they were gifted and put it all into his bank to cover up the costs of the party. He wrote: “My wife (24F) and I (29M) are having our first baby boy. We are due in May, so we had our shower last weekend. Her family didn’t really plan the whole thing other than decorating so I ended up purchasing a venue as I wanted to make a big deal of this to make my wife feel special.”
“I spent $2,500 on this venue which I was prepared to do and okay with. My wife wanted something smaller initially but I wanted to do the co-ed thing and invite my friends and family too. After paying for the place, my account was depleted and I won’t be paid again for two weeks. So I took all the cash we were given in cards and deposited into my account. We ended up getting about $1,600, so I only ended up paying less than $1000 for the shower.”
He added, “My wife is upset about this because she feels as if the money should be used for more baby things and not to ‘pay myself back’, as she put it.” He mentioned that he told his wife that he can’t have no money in his account for two weeks, to which she replied that he should’ve thought about it before spending all of it. He further explained that she was also upset because the majority of the money had come from her family.
“I can’t help but feel like she’s being ungrateful about the situation, but I also possibly should have planned ahead so I wouldn’t be left with no money. I will probably use the money on baby stuff anyway, however, I need gas and food money as well,” he continued.
Over 3,900 users commented on the post, with most of them agreeing that the man was in the wrong. People criticized him for wastefully spending so much money on a baby shower, instead of saving up for his baby. While one user asked him to “grow up”, another one mocked him for not knowing how to manage money even at 29. They advised him to learn how to listen to his wife, instead of calling her ungrateful for something she didn’t even want.
After receiving so much criticism online, the father-to-be made some edits to his original post, updating people on how the situation had changed. He mentioned that he truly assumed that the money given at baby showers is to be used to pay for it. He added that the replies to his post made him realize that he was being “rash and impulsive”, and so he’d give all the money to his wife and let her decide what to do with it.
