A women rights advocate raising the ante against war-related sexual violence
Ukrainian women’s rights advocate named Hrystyna Kit has been actively raising her voice against the rising sexual violence in the war-torn country. The war has been shuddering many human groups across the world. However women in the country have been experiencing the worst of the conflict. Many instances of rape sexual violence and nudity have come up in the country.
War upends all dimensions of peace and harmony. It affects all strata of human society. Millions of people lose their lives to various regional conflicts across the globe. However it pushes the vulnerable further into the den of horrors. Among them women have always stood at the suffering end. Perpetrators of violence have always perceived them as a soft target to unleash a wave of horror in the region. A similar trauma is meeting women caught in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Sexual violence has never seen its low. Women have always paid the price of human insanity and violence. No matter what the issue has been the patrons of violence have always caught them off-guard. The roots of patriarchy have always managed to triumph over the flags of modernization. Therefore the 21st century is no exception to the trend of sexual violence in conflict-torn regions.
The ongoing Russian-Ukraine war has accelerated the incidence of sexual violence in the region. The impact of the war has not all been about political and economic stuff. Human rights have also been pushed off the cliff of anarchy. Therefore there are no nets of law and order to safeguard the interests of women in the region. Women are struggling hard to protect themselves from the cannibals pedaling the waves of violence.
Owing to these horrors countless instances of sexual violence gang rapes and public nudity have come up in the region. Raising her voice against unbridled sexual violence a Ukrainian women's rights advocate named Hrystyna Kit has got on the board. The co-founder of JurFem (the Ukrainian Women Lawyers Association) has drawn worldly attention to the heinous war crimes emerging in the region.
Not just that the war has also pushed the risk to women and girls by two times. Taking on that part Kit shared “There’s no doubt that no one feels safe because of Russia’s war against Ukraine. And women and girls have become even less protected from gender-based violence. Rape—usually gang rape—sexual torture forced nudity and other forms of abuse have been documented by journalists human rights organizations and law enforcement agencies.”
Worsening the situation the true scale of violence and its repercussion are ambiguous. According to Kit “We will have to work with the consequences of conflict-related sexual violence for many years to come.” Adding to that she shared “Cases of domestic or sexual violence against women in particular in public places haven’t disappeared. People who were abusive and violent within the family continue to commit acts of violence.”
The war has complicated her fight against female violence. She said “It’s difficult to move forward in the fight against violence against women when you live in a state of war and fight for your life and the lives of your children every day.”
Well it is not the war that solely pushed women into dungeons of exploitation. The trauma of afflicted women also scales up owing to the lack of legal assistance.Kit realized that when she started her career. According to her “There were not many lawyers willing to work with such cases because these are often latent crimes.” She wants Ukrainian females safe.
