A girl bagged a bravery award for saving her mother from electrocution

Womanhood July, 03, 2025

A 6-year-old student named Shivangi won accolades for saving her mother and sister from the fatal effects of electrocution. The girl from Jalgaon (India) was in senior KG when her mother got electrocuted. Seeing her mother in that condition, she pulled her younger sister back. She brought a stool, stood on that, and switched off the rod.

Mishappenings do not knock at one’s door before wreaking havoc. A slight miss on one’s part is enough to rope them into one’s life. Therefore, one can avert them only by being in one’s mind when one is pursuing risky sprees. Well, one may not avert every accident. However, one can pare down the severe repercussions by making the best of one’s mind. A girl from Jalgaon (India) saved her mother and sister with her presence of mind. Not just that, she also received a bravery award for her feat.

Shivangi was in senior KG. She was at home with her mother and younger sister on 5 January 2021. Her mother, Gulbakshi Kale (a retired Navy official), went ahead to heat bath water in a steel bucket using an iron rod electric heater. That was enough to set the ground for a mishappening. The moment she switched it on, she started getting electrocuted.

Adding to her fear, her younger daughter named Ishanvi started moving toward her on seeing her in that condition. Gulbakshi could not alert her as she could not speak in that state. To her relief, her elder daughter Shivangi appeared on the scene. She pulled Ishanvi back. Not just that, she took her away and told her not to go to her mother. Moving in, she saw the iron rod electric heater plugged in. However, the switchboard was around 5 feet in height.

The little girl could not reach it. However, she did not give up. She brought a stool and stood on that. Then, she switched off the iron rod electric heater. Therefore, she managed to save her mother from the severe repercussions of electrocution. Gulbakshi was out of her wits. She could not sense anything. She made her way out and sunk into the sofa. Shivangi came up to pat on her back. Not just that, she also asked her mother if she was fine.

Prasad Kale (her father and Jalgaon plant head of a manufacturing giant) came back to know her feat. He decided to apply for Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar for bravery. To their delight, Shivangi’s bravery managed to secure a place in the list of 29 awardees. Expressing his delight, he said, “Around 600 applications were received out of which 29 were selected and Shivangi is one of them.”

Shedding light on the incident, Gulbakshi said, “I could see my younger daughter running towards me but I could not even ask her to stop because I could not speak. Just then, Shivangi held Ishanvi by her hand and pulled her back. I saw her taking charge of the situation when she instructed her sister to not go near me. I saw her eyes tracing my hand to the switchboard, which was at around 5feet height. She brought a stool to stand on and switched off the appliance.”

Adding to that, she shared, “The effect of electrocution wore off and I stopped shaking physically. But I was in a state of shock and I sat speechless on the sofa. Shivangi patted me on my back and asked me if I was okay.”

Thus, the 6-year-old student of Podar International School turned a savior.
